While I was in service I had my first attack of rheumatic trouble, in Gonda district. Thakur Vikram Singh, the ayurvedacharya, treated it. The complaint came back from time to time until I retired in 1962 — but by God's grace and the air of this place it has gone. It gives me no trouble now.
The second illness that might have killed me was diabetes. I fell ill and went to Ganpati at Lakhimpur. The doctors there treated my fever and the heavy cough, and said it was the beginning of diabetes — and besides that raised the fear of tuberculosis, which added to my worry.
Lahan (Lallan — Dr. Janmajai Singh) had finished the first year of his MD and had entered the railway service; his first posting was to the great Northeastern Railway hospital at Banaras. A telegram was sent and the two of us took him there. At the Sir Sundarlal Medical College — attached to the Hindu University founded by Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya — we had the tests done.
As it happened a Bengali assistant surgeon did the examination, and said to Lahan — don't you know me? I did my MD there myself. Then the senior doctor was consulted; he said it was a cough gone bad, and not tuberculosis. And he said — your son is here in the hospital, you will have nothing to spend on medicine.
In the laboratory only a trace of sugar was found in the urine. The hospital doctor gave me a book called Guide for Diabetics, which I read and took to heart.
When I came home well again, I gave my time to the fields and the orchard, the market and the accounts. At first light I walked the three kilometres to the Sitapur highway and back; and with that going and coming at both ends of the day, my diabetes — a disease meant to last a lifetime — went away.
At Sitapur, where the urine used to be taken for testing because Lahan was the railway doctor, they had it examined in the laboratory — and no trace of sugar was ever found. Then you advised me that I could now take anything, sugar as well — but I still keep the sugar low. In the cold weather I take my tea with tulsi leaf, black pepper and giloy in it.
Once, having fallen ill, I sent word to Lahan from Itaunja railway station that I was coming to Sidhauli. There a strengthening treatment was given, but my hiccups would not stop. We went as far as the ayurvedic hospital, and still they could not be checked; my whole body jerked with them and it became impossible even to sit.
I said to Lahan — now I think it will take my life. Then word was sent by telephone to a gentleman whose work was inspecting the loading of the railway's goods trains. He said he would come at once, went to the bazaar, brought something, ground it, prepared it in water and gave it to me — and the hiccups stopped instantly. Half an hour later they came again; another dose was given and they went for good.
An acquaintance of his, a trader at Shahjahanpur seven miles off, kept coming and going. In those days they took me and my life was saved and the illness cured. At four o'clock pomegranate juice had been brought.
In 1994 I went to Sitapur on private business. Getting down from the train, I waited a while because of a light drizzle. It had been my rule never to share a rickshaw with a second passenger — but compelled that day I sat in one, and sat with extra care, having taken the measure of the man and his manner.
At a homeopathy store I wrote out a prescription and left it, saying that on the way back I would pay and collect it and go on to the station. In front of the shop the telegraph department had dug a trench; there was water in it. The rickshaw-wallah said — Babu ji, you will not get across this. So I got down from the rickshaw, taking someone's support —
— and just then the wheel went into the trench, the rickshaw tipped to one side and I rolled off to the right and fell. The shopkeepers picked me up. I was hurt. My whole body was soaked — I washed my clothes and put them on, and spread the wet ones out to dry. After a while the pain came; having bathed, I sent to the bazaar for something and rubbed it in, and got some relief. But by the next day I could not get up, and my neck would not turn.
In my trouble I did not go to the doctor. I went instead to the man who had set a takht by the roadside and made tea himself and served it to people. The hospital was close by.
He was sitting on the takht. Hearing what had happened, he felt it with his hand and knew at once that a nerve in the neck had slipped. He turned the neck again and again and set it right.
I gave him one and a half rupees. He asked nothing of anybody — what was given he took. He told me that near the road there was a man who kept a preparation in leaves; he gave me the medicine and said — warm it and rub it in, then lay it on a drumstick leaf and bandage it to the neck. And he said — if the pain remains, come back.
I did all this and completely recovered. To this day that joint aches, especially when I walk fast.
After my wife's death I read the Vedas, the shastras, the Upanishads, and Kalyan from 1935 onwards; the works of Swami Dayanand Saraswati and of Tulsidas; the discourses of Swami Ramtirth; the Raja Sahab's Gita at Prayagraj, with Shankaracharya's commentary; and the Gita Rahasya, written in an English jail. Bhartrihari's Shringar Shatak, Vairagya Shatak and Niti Shatak as well. In Ayurveda, the Charak Samhita, the Sharangdhar, and the Bhav Prakash.
They are all in the library. I have entered them separately in a small register under numbers, which makes them easy to find.
One more thing — I had the chance to go to Madras, and to see the sea, and the fishermen, and the cargo ships. I went with the wish to satisfy a longing: to see Rameshwaram, and the Vivekananda statue that can be seen standing off the shore in the sea. But I got to see only the sea and the ships — Lahan's examination was reported by the doctor two days later and we were sent back.
There the hotel and the railway food came to everyone, but I was aching for dal, rice, roti and vegetables. As it happened I met a social worker from Bihar on the road, and he fed me dal and rice in his own quarters.
We came back to Lucknow. Lahan took fever; a telephone call reached the railway hospital at Nagpur and the railway doctor and compounder came with medicines. We came away having enjoyed the green orange orchards of Nagpur. There too I fell ill — the hiccups started again, and medicine set it right and we came home.
I have now told Dhananjay that, in accordance with the Family Settlement that Ganpati wrote, he should keep the full accounts by the agricultural year and take a fifth part for his service out of whatever is saved.
My reckoning that someone in the family would care for me has proved right. Dhananjay's wife has carried that care to its furthest point. And Dhananjay himself, giving up his practice in the town four kilometres off, has had to labour on the joint family's property — the fields, the orchards and the rest — like a hired man.
The service my own wife gave must be called an ideal. She cared for your mother too, after Ganpati's death. She would bring the vegetables in from the kitchen garden, cut them, and cook them in the pan on the hearth — food that was not only good to eat but kept up the iron in the blood. As it happened she was at the Lucknow house when the end came.
Our old servant Mataprasad, who was at your grandfather’s house on ten rupees a month with food and such personal comforts — Bhaiya (Th. Bharat Singh) looked after him too. Chakrapal, on retiring from the post office, became a branch postmaster; Bhaiya said, give him twenty rupees as well, so that he is not deprived of the tobacco and the rest that he used. As it happened he gave up that habit, and ended his life on the twenty-seventh day exactly after Bhaiya’s death. And it is coincidence indeed that he had been born on the very day Bhaiya was.
At his death he had laid on his eldest son the charge of looking after the widow and the grandchildren; I am discharging it — giving financial help, and carrying out his wish to my last breath.
The second illness that nearly took me came in September 2001. On a telephone message I was admitted to the divisional railway hospital at Badshahnagar. When I came to myself some days later, the doctors, after round-the-clock attendance, set my mind at rest and said that life was given back to me. It was the same illness of which Baba Sahab had died in hospital. That gift of life is what keeps me in health today.
In those same days weakness came slowly into my legs and walking without another's support became difficult. In the morning I am helped up; going up by the stairs, two people walk me about with support. A homeopathic medicine has checked it somewhat.
After the walk, without resting, I come down, do my reading of the Gita and of Kalyan, and take my breakfast at eight.
Now I give the pen its rest. The rest of this life, up to my death, you may write yourself. All the grandsons and great-grandsons who have come out of their studies by now — perhaps in time they too will find their feet.
Today nothing else comes to mind. I have finished the life.
There is nothing further left in my memory now.
